Redware is a form of earthenware pottery made of clay containing considerable iron oxide, which turns reddish-brown when fired.  In the United States, it was utilitarian and affordable, but also decorative as redware potters used different techniques for folk art designs.  Redware was originally finished with lead-based glazes, but many potters today use safer glazes.  Please note descriptions for pieces using lead glaze that are not food safe.
