ASL Pewter French Butter Keeper

$ 79.00

The ASL Pewter French Butter Keeper makes a unique gift.  Approximately 2¾ inches tall and 3 inches round.

Pieces like this were used for centuries to keep butter fresh and cool.  Fill the inner top cup (the "bell") with room temperature butter or margarine.  Make sure there are no large air pockets.  Put 1 to 1 1/2 inches of cold water in the bottom of the two parts.  When the lid is in place, a seal is created with the inner cup, which keeps the butter fresh and easy to spread.  Keep the bell on your countertop.  Keep the surface of the butter free of crumbs.  Change the water every 3 to 4 days.  If your room temperature is about 78 degrees, put the keeper in the refrigerator overnight.

What is Pewter: Pewter is one of the oldest known alloys, dating back to the Bronze Age. Fine pewter is a tin-based alloy consisting of at least 90% tin and the other 10% is some combination of silver, copper, bismuth, and antimony or more tin. At ASL Pewter, the alloy we use for all our casting, metal spinning and welding is 92% tin, 2% copper, 6% antimony. It’s the same alloy the London Pewterers’ Guild designated as “Fine Pewter” in 1635.

 This is lead-free pewter made in historic Ste. Genevieve, Mo.
