Yummy Summers!

I’ve always thought the best part of summer is fresh produce!  Fresh from your own garden or the farmers’ market.

We have a small garden, growing lettuces, kale, spinach, tomatoes, summer squash, zucchini, radishes, carrots and herbs.  We incorporate fruits into our landscape, with apple trees in the front yard, blueberry foundation plantings, raspberry and blackberry vines along the front fence line, and a stubborn strawberry patch in the back.  (I say stubborn because these strawberry plants do not give in to the summer heat, producing berries through October one year!)  And we are fortunate to have an abundance of great farmers markets near us.

Are you looking for new recipes for your summer produce?  Try one of the cookbooks available at Mooreville Mercantile on sale through June. (You might want to also try some of our fabulous jams, jellies, applesauce and relishes from Cooper’s Mill!)

Anita Musgrove's Alabama Back Road Restaurant Recipes is part of the State Back Road Restaurant Cookbook series.  It is her goal in this book to show her love of Alabama prepared food from the Northern Mountain region through the River Region and finishing up in the Gulf Coast Region. It’s on sale for $14.21 through June 30.

Sheila Simmons & Kent Whitaker’s Alabama Hometown Cookbook is part of their State Hometown Cookbook series:  Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and now, Alabama. It’s on sale for $14.21 through June 30.

Always popular, the classic Simple Cooking for a Simple Life by Jill Petersen of “A Simple Life” magazine is a hardcover book featuring simple recipes from antique collectors and dealers. 128 pgs., 137 recipes & over 100 full color photographs of kitchens, butteries & taverns.  Also available is The Mooresville Table. Although small in number, our village is big on hospitality! Mooresville residents have shared their favorite family recipes in this 68-page cookbook published by the Town of Mooresville (December 2013). Sold by Mooresville Mercantile on behalf of the town; all proceeds benefit the Town of Mooresville. Only $10! (As we sell this for the town, we cannot discount the price.)
